蒋志刚、马勇、吴毅、王应祥、周开亚等著的《中国哺乳动物多样性及地理分布》收录了中国（包括台湾地区）已知哺乳动物种类。通过收集整理正式出版文献中的哺乳动物编目资料和最新研究发现，本书作者根据最新的动物分类系统更新了中国哺乳动物多样性编目，经过甄别筛选，确定中国现有哺乳动物12目55科245属673种。此数据更新了中国哺乳动物记录。本书为中英文对照，由世界著名哺乳动物学家DonE．Wilson博士作序。前言回顾了中国动物学研究史、本书中中国哺乳动物编目的研究过程和中国哺乳动物学研究的未来方向。正文逐一介绍了每种中国哺乳动物的分类地位、学名、命名人、英文名、同物异名、种下单元、所在生境与生态系统、濒危状况、国家保护等级、IUCN红色名录、中国红色名录等级、CITES附录以及国内地理分布区和分布国家，并配有最新的物种分布图。

本书适合作为动物学研究工作者、自然保护管理人员和动物爱好者的案头参考书。

蒋志刚、马勇、吴毅、王应祥、周开亚等著的《中国哺乳动物多样性及地理分布》在细致的科研分析上，梳理了我国目前所有的673种哺乳动物物种及其地理分布，每个物种的信息包括物种名、受威胁程度、物种分布图等信息。在前人研究基础上，对物种信息给予了更新，增加了部分新物种，删除了在中国没有分布的物种。
